Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Law & Justice, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Minister of India announced on Twitter that India has now become the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. He said that in the last 5 years, over 200 mobile phone manufacturing plans have been set up across the country.
Graphical data shows that mobile phone manufacturing plants have grown by 200% in 2019 as compared to 2014. “Under the leadership of PM @narendramodi, India has emerged as the 2nd largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. In the last 5 years, more than 200 Mobile Phone Manufacturing units have been set up. #ThinkElectronicsThinkIndia,” Prasad posted on Twitter.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT also noted, “Now is the opportunity for companies to consider #India as a destination in ESDM sector and be part of the next largest #ElectronicManufacturing Hub of the world. #ThinkElectronicsThinkIndia.”
Many smartphone manufacturers including the likes of Apple are considering setting up local units. Some companies are already manufacturing their products in the country. Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain tweeted that 99% of Mi and Redmi phones are Made-in-India and 65% of parts are sourced locally.

The luxury smartphone maker, Apple, manufactures certain iPhone models locally here in collaboration with contract manufacturers Wistron and Foxconn. The government has announced new schemes on June 2 to provide a boost to the Indian Electronics sector as we celebrate India becoming the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world.
