Top 10 Indian Start-ups Lead by Women

With changing times women have not only stepped towards entrepreneurship but are also doing wonders. There is no golden formula for launching a successful business. It makes no difference when or where you begin your journey. These Indian women entrepreneurs are proof of that. They have not just started their business but are building it tremendously.

Let’s take a look at some of India’s most successful female entrepreneurs.

Nykaa

Nykaa was founded in 2012 by Falguni Nayar to design a multi-brand, omnichannel beauty retail company. Nykaa has become India’s leading beauty retailer. Falguni has established a beauty and lifestyle retail empire of over 1500 brands, including its private label, available online and in 68 stores across India. Nykaa’s revenue surpassed Rs. 1200 crores in FY19 and is expected to surpass Rs. 2000 crores in FY20.

Falguni began her career in consulting with A.F. Ferguson & Co. after graduation from IIM Ahmedabad. She then worked for Kotak Mahindra Bank for 18 years. Nykaa has recently joined the unicorn group thanks to new investment from current sponsor Steadview Capital of Rs 100 crore ($13 million). She is undoubtedly one of India’s most well-known female entrepreneurs that you should be aware of.

Shopclues

Radhika Ghai co-founded Shopclues after a decade of experience in an industry like retail, eCommerce, fashion and lifestyle, advertisement, and public relations. This tech-driven entrepreneur holds an MBA from Washington University.

In India, she is unquestionably a notable female entrepreneur. She was the first Indian woman to become a member of the Unicorn Society. Radhika also has a master’s degree in public relations and advertising. She has worked on strategic planning with Nordstrom and in the Wealth Management group at Goldman Sachs in New York and Menlo Park, California. 

Shopclues is currently India’s largest fully run marketplace, with over 7 million monthly visitors. It is currently present in over 9,000 Indian cities, towns, and villages. Shopclues is well-known for its kitchen, home, beauty, and electronics products.

Zivame

Richa Kar is the CEO and co-founder of Zivame, an online lingerie retailer. She came up with the term while researching the lingerie retail industry. She discovered that women were hesitant to browse for lingerie in actual outlet shops. Richa has extensive expertise in branding, retailing, and activities, both of which have aided her in bettering her name.

Zivame is an online lingerie shop that was founded in 2011. Zivame not only makes lingerie shopping simpler, but it also educates women about their sizes, styles, and more. Per month, it receives over 2.5 million visitors. Zivame is now valued at $100 million and is the industry leader. In FY19, it also posted a revenue of Rs. 140 crores. Amisha Jain is the current leader of Zivame.

Yourstory

Shradha Sharma, the founder of YourStory, is a Patna resident who attended St. Stephens College in New Delhi and MICA in Ahmadabad. She then went on to work for The Times of India and CNBC TV18, where she gained field reporting expertise. In August 2008 Shradha started her own company named YourStory.

YourStory is the most popular media outlet for entrepreneurs, startups, and businesses to share news and support their companies. Every month, the website hits over 10 million active readers. It has also been invested in by Ratan Tata. They also host several events, such as YS Meetups, TechSparks, MobileSparks, and SheSparks, that have reached over 1.7 million users.

Limeroad

Suchi Mukherjee is an Indian woman entrepreneur who founded Limeroad, online clothes, and fashion accessories marketplace. The brand is well-known for its fashionable men’s and women’s clothing. She holds a master’s degree in finance from London’s Economic School. Suchi Mukherjee, who has nearly 18 years of experience in the top management of leading consumer technology companies, decided to pursue entrepreneurship while on maternity leave. She has won many awards, including Business Today’s Coolest Start-up of the Year, Infocom’s Woman of the Year-Digital Business, and NDTV’s Unicorn Start-up Prize.

Limeroad recently raised $30 million in a Series C funding round, and things are only getting better for the company.

YourDOST

Richa Singh is the co-founder of YourDOST, an online mental health platform. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology. She witnessed the suicide of a fellow IIT student who was concerned about their grades after her graduation. As a result, she created a website that provides free access to vetted and accessible counselors.

YourDOST is an anonymous forum that helps users to request assistance and discuss their issues. It helps users to remain fully anonymous on the web at all times. Though seeking professional assistance is free, voice and video calls are paid at Rs 400 and Rs 600 per 45-minute session, respectively. Since its launch in 2014, they’ve seen more than 70,000 users. The platform is currently being funded by angel investors in a pre-Series A round led by SAIF Partners.

Sugar

Vineeta Singh and Kaushik Mukherjee, both IIM Ahmedabad alumni, created the luxury beauty brand SUGAR. SUGAR was first released in 2012. The aim was to create a collection that was more compatible and affordable with Indian skin tones. SUGAR has grown rapidly, and the company now claims to have 195 locations in India. It has recorded a growth rate of 4X in FY19, accounting for INR 200 crore sales.

Vineeta Singh and Kaushik Mukherjee, co-founders of SUGAR Cosmetics, were overjoyed when their company’s net sales for FY 19-20 reached Rs 105 crore. As of January 2020, the Mumbai-based startup was making monthly sales of Rs 5 crore to Rs 10 crore, with a revenue goal of Rs 200 crore for the year.

Sheroes

Sairee is one of India’s most successful businesswomen. Fleximoms and Newslink were also co-founded by her. She has also founded the Sheroes. in. Sairee is a TED speaker and was named one of India’s most powerful women in business in 2012. She has also been awarded the Devi award, Femina Achievers award, Cartier Award, editor’s choice for L’Oreal Femina Women’s Award. In 2018, she was ranked 53 on Onalytica’s “Future of Work Top 100 Influencers” list.

Sheroes is a platform for women only that provides guidance, services, experiences, and connections. The platform is primarily designed to encourage women to converse and learn from one another about a variety of topics.

Yatra.com

Sabina Chopra is the COO of Yatra’s business hotels. She has also held the position of executive vice president of operations in the past.

Chopra led the India operations of ebookers, a European online travel firm, before co-founding Yatra.com. She graduated from Delhi University with a bachelor’s degree.

Yatra.com is a travel search engine and online travel agency based in India. Its headquarters is in Gurugram, Haryana. Dhruv Shringi, Manish Amin, and Sabina Chopra formed it in August 2006. With a 30% share of the 370 billion (US$5.2 billion) market for online travel-related transactions in April 2012, it became India’s second-largest online travel service.

Miss Malini

Miss Malini Agarwal is the creative director and founder of her own company-Miss Malini. She is one of the few Indian women entrepreneurs who began her career on the couch and went on to become a host, a digital influencer, a best-selling author, and finally an entrepreneur.

MissMalini has established itself as a go-to source for Bollywood, Fashion, and Lifestyle news. It now attracts over 40 million users each month and has several digital properties given to different niches. Every month, the website receives 3-4 million unique visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. The platform has secured a funding of Rs 10.4 crore from Orios Venture Partners and New Enterprise Associates.
