Top food Start-ups in India

Food has successfully carved its way as a favorite luxury in every household, resulting in a plethora of business opportunities. Getting good meals without waiting in huge lines and stepping out of the house to a supermarket has become antiquated ideas.

Gone are the days when there were few alternatives to pick from; now, there is a multitude of options to choose from in every variation, all of which are available in several locations and are ready to be delivered to our doorsteps safely.

Several start-ups are thriving in the market with the express purpose of providing people with something they may not have experienced before at a very liberal price in each case.

There are a variety of initiatives accessible, ranging from junk food to Indian foods to fitness foods, all of which are attempting to raise customer awareness of their existence and relevance while also securing a piece of India’s booming food tech sector.

Zomato

Zomato is a popular meal delivery service that allows customers to choose from a variety of restaurants on its website and have their orders delivered right to their door.

This business began as a firm named Foodiebay in 2010, and it now operates in over 1000 cities across India, as well as internationally. Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, the founders of this concept, came up with it after noticing the problem of long lines to order and select one’s favorite meal.

As a result, in 2010, they changed the company’s name to Zomato and expanded its operations across India to meet the needs of its consumers. Since then, there has been no going back, and this business has become a unicorn, the first of its type in the Food Tech industry.

Swiggy 

Swiggy is a food-delivery service. Nandan Reddy and Sriharsha Majety, both BITS Pilani graduates, founded this Bangalore-based meal delivery firm.

This company was formed in 2014 and has managed to climb the success ladder thanks to its no-minimum-order policy and the listing of over 10,000 eateries on its site around the country. This firm now accounts for 35-40% of the market share of food companies that have emerged.

This firm launched a project dubbed Swiggy Access in 2017, which has yet to be executed, but the goal was to invite restaurant owners to create and run neighborhood kitchens through the app.

Faasos 

Faasos began in Pune in 2004 as a network of Kolkata roll shops. It presently delivers across India, with a focus on cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. The creators, Jaydeep Burman and Kallol Banerjee came up with the concept because they wanted to bring something Indian to a market that was dominated by burgers and pizzas.

 Faasos has a cloud kitchen-based business strategy, which sets it apart from other food tech companies, yet it faces stiff competition in the industry. This company now works in over 160 kitchens and hires people on a case-by-case basis.

In 2019, this firm generated Rs. 305 crores in revenue.

FreshMenu

FreshMenu is a meal delivery service that prides itself on innovation, which includes changing the menu every day, which is one of the most effective ways to keep customers engaged and not bored.

This company, which was founded in 2014, currently has offices in Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, and Mumbai. This mostly focuses on delivering food to its consumers within 45 minutes to keep it fresh, as well as the fact that they manage 99 percent of their deliveries personally from their hyperlocal eateries.

Rashmi Daga, the creator, thinks she concentrated on having a distinct restaurant-like experience every day.

InnerChef 

Rajesh Sawhney, Sanjeev Singhal, and Bal DiGhent founded Innerchef in Haryana in 2015. This project began as a way to link working youth with a nutritious lunch.

InnerChef now serves across Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Gurgaon using a concept that involves a large number of kitchens in the food preparation process, which is then overseen and controlled by a stringent and central taste and delivery procedure that ensures everything meets regulatory standards. 

This is owing to the startup’s success, which has seen it fulfill over 1000 orders each day, putting it in direct competition with other prominent companies like Box8 and TinMen. 

The chefs have created an extended menu that includes Indian, Asian, European, and Mediterranean cuisines, all of which are completely anchored in India.

Dineout 

Dineout is one of the most well-known and popular restaurant table reservation apps that has swept the industry. Everyone likes it because of the huge discounts and deals that are always available on one or more restaurants, and it is accessible with listings of virtually all of the city’s main eateries.

This Noida-based company was founded in 2012 by Ankit Mehrotra, Vivek Kapoor, Sahil Jain, and Nikhil Bakshi. It began by listing 75 restaurants in New Delhi and has since expanded to include leading restaurants in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bangalore.

This is both a B2C and a B2B model connecting the consumers to the restaurants. 

Tandurust

Tandurust is a meal delivery service that focuses on nutrition and calorie counting, with a concentration on fitness enthusiasts. Pushpesh Dutt and Sudhanshu Sharma, who believe in the importance of living and eating properly, started this firm in 2014.

This Bangalore-based company operates on a subscription-based model, with the option to subscribe to weekly or monthly meal (breakfast, lunch, and snacks) plans based on the buyer’s goals and preferences, with staples such as Oats upma, baked mix-veg paratha, peas sandwich, and broccoli salad among the menu items, with prices ranging from 150 to 300 INR.

SpoonJoy

SpoonJoy is yet another food and beverage startup dedicated to making healthy food cheaper and more accessible to the general public. Manish Jethan established this in 2013.

The company provides a subscription-based online platform that allows office workers and other consumers to easily and quickly order meal packs such as set cut-fruit packs and have them delivered to their respective offices to combat the problem of office workers skipping meals and not having enough variety to eat.

The fun fact about this company is that it has been backed by Flipkart.
